Looking back to Albermarle - back to the future?

Posted on Tuesday, August 21, 2018

Fifty years ago the Albemarle reported and its main recommendations were accepted and the modern Youth Service was consolidated and created. All of the progress that flowed from that achievement is now under grave threat after nearly a decade of austerity. The Albemarle Committee was set up because the Union and the voluntary sector complained about the cuts and neglect of the service in the early and mid 1950s. The situation today is more severe and the service could soon be wiped out as cuts to local government affect in house services and funding to the voluntary sector. We must stay hopeful that union campaigning and solidarity will see us through and remain committed to ensuring we are all active in the fight. Read the Report which can be accessed here and above all contribute to our modern day equivalent - the Labour Party Consultation on a Statutory Youth Service by 12th November 2018.
