Unite statement of the retirement of Brendan Barber, General Secretary of the TUC
Posted on Thursday, April 19, 2012
Commenting on the announcement that Brendan Barber is to step down as general secretary of the Trades Union Council at the end of the year, Len McCluskey, Unite general secretary, said:
"Brendan has been a tremendous servant to the union movement in a truly testing period. The implosion of casino finance, rapacious corporations destroying communities, and a Tory-led government intent on shrinking our services, have all called for TUC to stand up and be heard.
"The march of the half million for an alternative through London last year, with Brendan at is head, is testimony to how this movement, powered by the TUC, unites communities like no other. Unite members have good cause to thank Brendan for his assistance and counsel in numerous difficult situations over the last decade.
"On behalf of Unite members, I want to thank him for his friendship, leadership and advice over the years. We wish him well in his retirement and know that he will continue to serve this movement whatever his future may bring.’
